Okay, lets say musical genres don't exist - doesn't matter.

Now, let's get to the point.

Please tell me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you even tried to address the question "What is music?" in either of those posts. You're making feeble excuses to sidestep my question. So I'm asking again, please enlighten me on the subject. You do, of course, have the credentials to do so.

I have no quibbles with you calling rap a form of art. What annoys me about you in your blatant arrogance and superiority complex - not to mention your almost political aversion to actually giving a direct answer.

Well I didnt think that I had to do this but...

I can not sit down and explain something to you in 3 hours of typing that takes Profs two semesters to fully teach. I do not have Dr. in front of my name, and even if I did I doubt that you could let it sink into your thick skull.

That clear enough for you?

O good, you have to wait and use big words untill someone else uses them (superiority complex)

So lets see your reply, Im ready to laugh at your ignorance some more.

I was trying not to let this conversation turn back into a flame fest, but you managed to get it there. Good job.

Blah blah blah etc.

I love how some people are all like, "Rap sucks. Rap isn't music. Can't spell crap without rap." Real braniacs there. Then the people defending rap are like, "Rap is just different. I like hip-hop, but not rap. I like independant rap. Old school is okay. Rap is spoken poetry with a drum beat (<--- seriously, WTF? That>
It really doesn't matter what people think of whatever music you listen to. Hell, I like rap. I love rap. I like Snoop, Emminem, 50 cent and Fat Joe. I like Run DMC, Beastie Boys and Tribe Called Quest. I like nicknames. If they don't have a nickname, screw 'em. I like the fact that there's so many rappers out there that they're starting to run out of nicknames and have to improvise. Like Petey Pablo... "Dang, all the good nicks are taken... I'll just use two first names, one english, one spanish." I like Dr. Dre simply for the fact that he just became DOCTOR Dre and some people spend seven or more years of their life going to school just to earn the title 'Doctor' and they will never earn as much money as this guy does. These are the same people who say, "Rap sucks." This guy can fall down and lose more money than a whole hospital. So all they rap about is money and ho's and guns and cars? Fantastic. Why? Because if I could have four things right now, it would probably be money, ho's, guns and cars, though I might trade in a few guns for some diamonds and other various and assorted bling. I want to be able to drive down the road in a '69 Caddy, pimped out, speakers pumping full blast, a ho or three in the back seat, my pit bull with a ruby collar sitting up front guarding a briefcase full of cash and guns, and enough hydraulics to where I could just jump to the next block if I so chose to do it. Yeah, I like rap.

All that said, I like Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and most rock. I like Reggae and Soca, Ska and Punk. For all the people putting down country? I like that too. I like just about anything that sounds good to me, and it really doesn't matter what other people think.

Saw earlier in the post but....didnt see if soemoen corrected but yes....in flames is from sweden and not norway.....but u were close enough...they share borders lol......i listen to metal and rap and im just saying that people hear g-unot and turn there heads.....i cant blame you....if it was the only thing i ever heard i wouldnt wanna listen to it either....as everyone who knows anything abotu rap music that there are too many people in the rap business disgracing the name....its actually hard to find good rap anymore...my motto for listening to rap is if you can turn on the radio to any given station and hear a song more than 2wice a day then i have no need to hear it...sad its come to that but the "bling bling" rappers will spend there million from there only selling cd and never be heard from again and maybe some talent will be heard instead of listening to how the crack deal went while banging this shortie in a white escalade with 28 inch gold spoke spinner rims lol

Surely, surely you came away from two semesters of classes with an idea of what it was? At the very least, explain to me the thesis of the class. Tell me, what did your class teach you? That music is defined by chords and transitions? That the emotion behind music is the most important? That auditory pleasure is the supreme judge of good music? I'm sorry, ignorant high school senior that I am, I can hardly understand the concept of music without your help.

I know what it feels like to listen to something so beautiful that your chest clenches and your throat catches. To listen to something so moving that you don't realize you've stopped taking in air, becoming completely still so that you can drink in that music with all your senses, listening with your being, not just with your ears. I know exactly what it's like to wish I could dance, and let loose with my body, and to lose all my restraining self-consciousness and dance my heart out to the beauty I am hearing.

I also know what its like to listen to something so fiery, angry, and passionate coming from someone's mouth that I feel I can't take it any longer. To feel your heart burning with indignation at the injustice you have vicariously suffered. To feel as if you are the one who is belittled, made into something less than human. Feeling as if you yourself are the piece of shit that others have trampled on.

I know what a comfort it can be to hearing music that commisserates with you in your sorrow. I know what it's like to listen to a piece so beautiful you want to break down and cry with tears of joy or tears of anguish, or somewhere in between.

Is that what music is? A blending of words, sounds, or both to twist your heart, incite your anger, elevate your soul, enrapture your body, break you down into tears? That's what it is to me. My ten years spent learning the basics of, and mastering the nuances of the violin have taught me what music is.

How do you define music Manderlock? Tell me what your classes have taught you.

Come again? I don't quite understand what you mean. Are you saying I'm not using "big words" until someone else uses them? Please, you have no standing with which to criticize my vocabulary. Unless, of course, I misunderstood your meaning.

Your kindly remark is most appreciated. Your sanctimonius attitude is not.

Music is a feeling coming from deep in your gut, once you hear it you will know what the deffinition music is. You will find it hard to explain it to other people, but I honestly hope you get there some day.

Thats about all Im saying as I am leaving this thread. However thanks to you and demontrace's hard heads, I now hate rap muisc. How could I like something that has fans as completly moronic as you two? I came into this thread defending rap, it got heated. Then you come into it not even for the points we were make, but just to ramrod me. You started in on me simply because I wasent being "nice", yet if you looked at demontraces and even your posts you might be able to see that I wasent the only one not playing "nice".

So yea rap suck, it only wishes it could be considered noise. There you happy? I refuse to stand up for rap anymore.

Im going to let you get the last word so go ahead and feel like youve beat me.

Perhaps you forgot to read this:
